Argentina are into the final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 4-2 penalties in the semi-final in Sao Paulo.

They now go on to face Germany in the World cup final.

In a largely listless affair, both teams struggled to create chances, with star forwards Arjen Robben and Lionel Messi both kept in check by the opponent’s defensive lineup.

The Dutch, in particular, looked to be holding on against the Argentinians, after they made it through to the semi finals on penalties against Costa Rica.

They made the curious decision not to substitute keeper Tim Krul onto the park late in the piece, as they did against Costa Rica, choosing instead to stick with Jasper Cillessen for the shootout.

Sergio Romero saved two shots as Argentina defeated the Netherlands 4-2 on penalties.

Romero held out spot kicks from Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder to put the Argentinians through after 120 minutes of largely negative semi-final football from both sides had ended 0-0.

Lionel Messi, Ezquiel Garay, Sergio Aguero and Maxi Rodriguez converted Argentina’s spot kicks while Arjen Robben and were on target for the Dutch.

The two sides went into football’s record books for the wrong reason as this was the first ever World Cup semi-final to end 0-0 after 120 minutes.

The match was a major anti-climax after Germany’s 7-1 hammering of Brazil on Tuesday with star strikers Lionel Messi and Arjen Robben both kept in deadlock.

Argentina will now face Germany in Monday morning’s (AEST) final in Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium.
