MATCH RESULT:

The Netherlands cap off a fine World Cup effort as they secure third place at this championship, beating Brazil 3 nil.

Holland now have a winning record over Brazil. The Dutch were very well organised at the back and went forward with purpose. Robben caused huge havoc yet again. The Dutch could have easily won by four.

» World Cup highlights and video

Brazil have conceded 14 goals – the most of any host nation at a World Cup. Brazil continue to fall apart and surely the only way is up. Expect big things for Holland at Euro no question. This is a team on the rise.

With wounds still fresh following a disastrous 7-1 semi-final defeat to Germany, Brazil must find a way to finish their poor World Cup campaign with a win against the Netherlands.

Brazil has failed to set the tournament alight so far and the absence of Thiago Silva and Neymar in the semi-final was enough for Germany to put the hosts to the sword.

Silva is expected to make his return tonight against Holland but the final make-up of Brazil’s defence is far from certain.

David Luiz, Dante, Marcelo and Fernandinho are coming off shocking performances against Germany and it remains to be seen how many of the preceding players will start against the Netherlands.

Upfront, Fred has been practically useless for Brazil as a no.9 and we may very well see Willian take his place in the starting side. Hulk and Oscar will be the players charged with igniting Brazil’s attack.

The Netherlands meanwhile are coming off a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Argentina but their campaign has been very successful overall.

The Dutch were not expected to progress too far into the tournament given that there was a large turnover of players following a poor 2012 Euro campaign.

Holland though are building a good team filled with many promising young players who will hopefully start against Brazil

Players such as Memphis Depay lead the new brigade of Dutch stars that will take charge of the side once Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie all move on.

Overall, today’s contest should be an entertaining affair. Brazil however are still feeling the effects of their shocking defeat to Germany and this may allow the Dutch to perhaps rub further salt into the wounds of the host nation.

Netherlands to win 2-1
