The Canberra Raiders defeated the Gold Coast Titans on Sunday afternoon by a score of 36 to 20.
The Raiders played with a great sense of freedom today, and scored some enterprising tries. There best player was Milford, but the forwards laid the platform for victory with tough runs in the middle of the park.
Campese wound back the clock with a solid performance and McCrone directed play well.
Youngster Brenko Lee showed why is he so highly rated with a fine performance in the centres before injury forced him from the field.
FINAL SCORE:
Raiders 36
Titans 20
Sunday afternoon football returns to the tourist strip when the Gold Coast Titans take on the Canberra Raiders. Join The Roar for live blog coverage from 2:00pm AEST.
Fresh from a morale-boosting win over South Sydney, the Titans will be out to prove that their resurgence isn’t temporary.
While the Raiders have been anchored near the bottom of the ladder for much of the season – they currently sit in 15th spot – they should be refreshed physically for the match against the Titans.
HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT OF THE 2014 STATE OF ORIGIN SERIES
They have had two weeks to brood over their one-point loss to the Tigers, a match they should have won after all of the key moments went their way. How they respond mentally to one of the most frustrating losses any team has suffered this season should be answered within the first ten minutes of this match.
The combination of a short-turnaround and representative commitments have played havoc with John Cartwright’s plans, and as a result he has named an extended squad to cover all eventualities.
Greg Bird, Nate Myles and David Taylor have all been named in the squad to face the Raiders, with Bird’s involvement in doubt after being charged by the match review committee following Origin 3.
Cody Nelson, Mark Ioane, Matt Srama and Tom Kingston have been included in extended eight-man bench. Halfback Albert Kelly and winger David Mead have both been named in the side despite injury concerns.
The Raiders too have made a number of changes to the side that faced the Tigers a fortnight ago. Sami Sauiluma comes onto the wing in place of Matt Allwood, while the other flank is yet to be determined after the NRL ruled out Jeremy Hawkins due to second-tier salary cap restrictions earlier in the week.
Brenko Lee, who starred against the Tigers with two tries, moves to the centres to cover the absence of Jack Wighton, who is out with a broken thumb.
The Green machine will be desperate for a win against the Titans, even though they have a poor record both away from Canberra and against the Gold Coast.
Despite the handicap of backing up from Monday night, and not knowing the final make-up of their side until kick-off, the Titans should have too much firepower for the Raiders.
Titans to win in a close one.
