Little things matter to Dees: Roos

Paul Roos is happy it’s little things, not big problems, demanding his attention.

The Melbourne coach says in past years, minor mistakes didn’t matter much for the Demons – they got thrashed anyway.

But now, especially after a three-point loss to Port Adelaide on Sunday, Roos says the little things require close inspection.

“It’s good to be that close to worry about those sort of things,” Roos said after Port pipped the Demons, 10.12 (72) to 10.9 (69) at Adelaide Oval.

“As a footy club, those sorts of things have been swept under the carpet in the past couple of years because instead of losing by 100 points, you lose by 94.

“The positive is we are now talking about those and their impact on a game because we got close.”

And while near enough isn’t good enough for Roos, he labelled Melbourne’s courageous efforts in their latest defeat as a new benchmark.

“Today I thought was super, a really competitive footy team,” he said.

“But for our guys, the next five weeks we need to show that.

“It was a good week for teams that are down the bottom of the ladder, to show … if you bring effort, you can challenge some of the better teams in the competition.”
