Malceski to the Demons?

With the announcement of Paul Roos signing on for another two years at the Demons, I’m predicting big things to a happen when the final curtain draws on the 2014 season.

Much like Buddy Franklin’s surprise signing to the Sydney Swans, I would imagine a lot has already gone on in the past nine months that we in the football community no nothing about.

Just last week, James Frawley was connected with the Gold Coast and Geelong. At the same time, Nick Malceski put contract talks on hold with Sydney.

Paul Roos is now at the helm of the Demons until the end of 2016. I would suggest he had a fair idea about where his future was heading long before throwing comments around earlier this year that the Dees would need to find his successor for next season.

There is potentially a decent hole in the Demons back six if Frawley departs the club. Paul Roos has focused strongly on improving the Dees defence and I would expect he would want this to remain solid in his quest to turn them into a top eight side by 2016 and beyond.

Nick Malceski is good candidate to help Roos in his quest. He fits the bill as a running half back who can play in the middle. He is a hard body and a reliable defender. He has a premiership under his belt and there is no doubt he can be a match winner up forward. At 29, 30 this August, he could offer the Dees two or three years of service within the time frames Roos needs.

I loathe to state the bleating obvious, but Roos knows Malceski pretty well. Could there have been a few cups of coffee down at the Entertainment Quarter during the 2013 off season?

With the departure of Frawley, the Dees will obtain a reasonable compensation pick. With the possible departure of Malceski, the Swans will receive something similar or better.

The Dees stand to gain a pick somewhere around one to four in the draft, a compensation pick for Frawley and potentially Nick Malceski.

The Swans stand to lose Ryan O’Keefe, Lewis Roberts-Thomson and possibly Adam Goodes to retirement. There is the possibility of them also giving up their first and second round picks for Callum Heeney.

Tom Mitchell looms as another player that could potentially look for a new home as he battles with injury and breaking back into the senior side.

Although the Swans may appear to be bursting at the seems, the exodus of the above players would release a fair amount of pressure.

I would expect a lot of activity around October. And we haven’t even scratched the surface.
