Australia A were 2-180 in their first innings at stumps on day three of their four-day match after South Africa A in Townsville.

The Australians trail by 153 runs after bowling out the tourists for 333.

South Africa A had resumed on 5-220 after a full day’s play was lost to rain on Friday.

After it was announced that Phil Hughes had been called up to replace the injured Shane Watson for Australia’s Tour of Zimbabwe, the Australia A captain notched up an unbeaten 71.

Hughes and South Australian teammate Tom Cooper (57) worked well together to put on a 120-run partnership before Cooper was caught behind off the bowling of Simon Harmer (1-55).

Hughes and Callum Ferguson (17no) remained not out at the end of Saturday’s play, with only one day remaining at Tony Ireland Stadium.

Earlier, Australian bowler Clint McKay was rewarded with figures of 3-52.

Farhaan Behardien (107) reached his century but was the last wicket to fall after he pulled a shot straight to Matthew Wade at deep square leg just before lunch.
