The Manly Sea Eagles have defeated the Gold Coast Titans on Sunday afternoon to move into first position on the premiership ladder.
In a tightly fought contest which saw just four tries scored.
The plucky Titans side would stay with the Sea Eagles all afternoon but the class of Daly Cherry-Evans and Kieran Foran were enough to see them over.
FINAL SCORE:
Sea Eagles 15
Titans 12
The Gold Coast Titans host the Manly Sea Eagles in a match that could have a big impact on the minor premiership. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 2:45pm (AEST).
The Titans currently sit in 13th position after tumbling down the ranking, whilst Manly sit in second with the possibility of moving into first with a win this afternoon.
Following a string of injuries and players on Origin duty, the Titans have won just two of their past 12 matches, with their finals chances all but dashed.
Manly, whilst they were last start losers, have been one of the form teams of the competition, winning four of their past five matches.
The Gold Coast will be playing their first game under interim coach, Neil Henry, and we may see the “mid-season coach effect”.
The Sea Eagles will want to bounce back after a disappointing performance against South Sydney last week.
The Titans will field the same 17 that put in a spirited performance on Monday night against the Roosters, Dave Taylor is the only injury concern and continues to be monitored.
Manly too have named the same 17 that went down to Souths. Steve Matai is a concern after a pectoral injury forced him from the field against the Rabbitohs.
The Sea Eagles are a tough and determined side. Their forwards get through their work without fuss, allowing Daly Cherry-Evans, Kieran Foran, Jamie Lyon and Brett Stewart to do their thing.
Manly’s left-side attack is one of the most potent in the league. Much of the side’s potency will depend on the fitness of Steve Matai though, he’s been very dangerous on the left edge and has a good relationship with Kieran Foran.
It will be interesting to see how Brad Takairangi acclimatises to the centres after spending a large chunk of the season in the halves. He’ll have his work cut-out opposing Jamie Lyon who remains one of the most potent centres in the competition.
The recent matches between these sides have been fairly equal affairs, with three wins each from their past six games.
The Sea Eagles’ current form would suggest that they would be easy winners. For them, the minor premiership is on the line.
Whilst for the Titans, they’ll want to get Neil Henry off to a winning start.
Manly have shown an ability to win at any cost this season and I see them being far too strong this afternoon.
