MATCH RESULT:

The Penrith Panthers have secured a thrilling one point victory over the North Queensland Cowboys on Monday night.

Matt Moylan was again the hero for the Panthers nailing a field goal in the 78th minute.

More injury concerns for Penrith with James Segeyaro limping off with an ankle injury. With the side already boasting a big injury list, they could ill-afford to lose their star hooker with just three rounds remaining in the season.

FINAL SCORE:
Panthers 23
Cowboys 22

The Panthers have been the surprise packet of the NRL season so far. No one, probably not even Penrith management themselves, would have picked the mountain men to be two points off top spot at the business end of the year.

The Panthers have endured a horrible injury toll, and will be without the likes of Peter Wallace and Brent Kite tonight, but this hasn’t stopped their momentum. Their largely no-name side is bucking expectations and comes into this one off the back of wins over the Dragons and Bulldogs.

Penrith has a young squad, led brilliantly by their dynamic hooker James Segeyarp, and are playing without fear.

On the other side of the field, the Cowboys boast vast experience and big stars.

Johnathan Thurston, Matt Scott, Ashton Sims, Tariq Sims, Kane Linnett and Antonio Winterstein are all internationals, while Glenn Hall has won a grand final, and both Robert Lui and Ray Thompson have many NRL games behind them.

Last weekend North Queensland whipped the Tigers 64-6 and they have won their past four matches in a row. The Cowboys are flying at the right time of the year and while they will be missing stars in front-rower James Tamou and outside back Brent Tate, it should not slow them down.

These two teams are evenly matched and rely heavily on their playmakers, Jamie Soward and Thurston, and their young fullbacks, Matt Moylan and Michael Morgan, to get them firing. It could come down to who wins the forward battle.

Despite being away from home, the Cowboys might edge this one, but they’re won’t be much in it.
