The opening round of the English Premier League kicked off on the weekend and the world’s most watched football competition did not disappoint, delivering some big results along with plenty of great goals.

In celebration of the EPL’s return, The Roar has compiled the top five goals of the opening round.

While some clubs failed to find form, others made the most of the off-season and delivered some vintage performances to remind the world that the EPL is back.

Controversially, the recently promoted Leicester City surprised Everton with a 2-2 draw.

However it was Swansea who produced the shock of the round when they took down heavyweights Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Normality was returned with Chelsea dispatching newcomers Burnley 3-1.

Defending champions Manchester City got their 2014/15 campaign off to a strong start holding Newcastle scoreless in a 2-0 win.

Liverpool also joined the opening round winners list, beating Southampton 2-1.

In case you missed the action over the weekend, here is a recap of some of the best goals of the round, chosen by The Roar.

First off the mark is Lee Cattermole. The Sunderland midfielder found the back of the net from long range as Sunderland drew 2-2 with West Brom.

Following for West Brom, Saido Berahino capitalised on a Sunderland mistake and a beautiful chip from Craig Gardner.

Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas set up arguably one of the best goals of the round, deftly sliding a medium ball through to Andre Schurrle who hit a brilliant one-touch pass past the Burnley keeper.

Nathaniel Clyne blasted the ball past Liverpools’s keeper following some skilful interplay by South Hampton’s forwards.

Manchester City joined the top five through a Edin Dzeko heel pass through to David Silva who powered the ball home in City’s 2-0 win over Newcastle.

The other results of the opening round saw Stoke go down 1-nil to Aston Villa, Hull defeat Queens Park Rangers 1-nil, Tottenham steal a late winner to sneak past West Ham, and Arsenal kick their season off with a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace.
