Injury clouds clearing for GWS

The injury cloud over Greater Western Sydney is starting to clear with good news over the health of co-captains Callan Ward and Phil Davis.

Key defender Davis suffered concussion and a calf injury in last Sunday’s AFL win over Melbourne, while midfielder Ward hurt his calf at the MCG.

Davis was in doubt for Saturday’s game with Collingwood, but could now play, while Ward was initially expected to miss the Giants’ two remaining matches, but has an outside chance of facing the Magpies at Spotless Stadium.

“Phil is tracking along pretty well,” Giants coach Leon Cameron said on Wednesday.

“He’s passed all his concussion tests and we’ve just got to see how his calf is.

“But he’s thrown his hand up. He’s a bit of a warrior for our footy club.

“He’s trained today, hopefully pulls up well tomorrow and trains Friday.

“We got some pretty good news about Callan Ward as well. His calf doesn’t look as bad as probably first thought, so he might be an outside chance for this week, but hopefully will play the following week.”

Cameron was confident the Giants would still field a good competitive forward line for their two remaining games despite being without injured spearheads Jonathon Patton and Jeremy Cameron.

The coach was pleased with the development of their third highly rated key forward Tom Boyd, who has played seven senior games.

“Young Tom Boyd is really coming along as a key position player,” Cameron said.

“How we’ve progressed his football this year, I’m really rapt we’ve done that. He’s played a lot of footy at NEAFL level and also AFL level now.

“Young James Stewart who played his first game last week, he’ll play there (in the forwards) probably this week.

“We’ve got young Cam McCarthy coming through, we’ve got Jon Giles, who has been playing some really good footy at the NEAFL level trying to get back into this side.

“So there’s a number of options for us to explore.”
