Please be gentle: Confessions of an AFL virgin

I love sport, all kinds of sport. I love the unity it brings to those who otherwise wouldn’t associate with each other and I love the wild spirit it gives people who are sitting among the crowd.

In saying that, I have never really had the opportunity to be completely immersed in AFL. I could tell you what the Cost of Living Allowance is, and what team Buddy Franklin left to come to Sydney Swans, and I could also tell you how many points can be scored by putting the ball through whatever posts.

But that’s about it.

Growing up in a rugby central household, AFL was never really a thing for me. I’ve always had friends who were crazy about their Aussie rules while I was more of a Darren Lockyer person.

If there is one thing I need to say about AFL, it is that their players have to be some of the fittest most talented athletes in the world. Just watching them run around the field makes me sweaty.

You would be hard stretched to find a dollar amount that would motivate me to get off the couch and play a full game of AFL. The athletes in this sport must be praised for their incredible talent.

I also find AFL to be not as structured as, for example, NRL, and I think that works really well for them. If an outsider, for example, were to watch one game of NRL and one game of AFL, I would guess that they’d better understand the mechanics of NRL than AFL because NRL is very structured in the way the game is played.

The great thing about AFL, however, is that lack of structure makes it even more unique, exciting and dynamic, and that’s why AFL fans are some of the greatest sporting fans in the world.

In exciting news, I will be attending my first ever AFL game this weekend when the GWS Giants host the Collingwood Magpies, the latter of which I have tentatively decided to make my team because of one certain player *cough* Dane Swan *cough*.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I came home from that game as a newly converted AFL fanatic. I certainly hope so.

Just don’t ask me what the rules are just yet because I’m still trying to wrap my mind around that.
