Port Adelaide have been struggling since the mid part of the season and it has seen them drop from a premiership contender to being pushed out of the top four.

They are still a narrow chance to get back into fourth place, but a win against Carlton this week will be absolutely necessary.

Carlton have seen some improved form in the last month, with wins over North Melbourne and the Gold Coast Suns, and close losses to top four teams in Fremantle and Geelong.

While their season is essentially over, they seem keen to enter the off-season with as much momentum as possible.

Port won the most recent match between these two teams in Round 1 this year, claiming a comfortable 33-point win.

They have had a generally spotty record in recent years, with neither of the two being particularly dominant.

The Power have topped up at team selection, bringing in regular players Jackson Trengove and Angus Monfries and dropping Tom Logan and Aaron Young back to the lower leagues.

Carlton have lost Dale Thomas and David Ellard to injury, and have brought in Kane Lucas, Blaine Johnson and Nick Holman as replacements, with Holman to make his AFL debut. Dennis Armfield has been omitted from the side.

The mentality of this game may well be the deciding factor. Port have everything to play for while Carlton is simply playing for respect at this point.

While the Blues have been in decent form lately, it may be hard to combat a team striving to prepare itself for finals when they themselves know that their season is dead one way or the other.

Prediction:
Port Adelaide simply have more to play for than Carlton and I expect them to put in more effort accordingly. A loss here would be a big blow to their finals campaign.

Port Adelaide by 24 points.
