The Brisbane Strikers may face a fight next season to retain former Australian goalkeeper Michael Turnbull, whose impressive form since joining the Brisbane side has made him a wanted man again overseas.

Turnbull, who has been the in form goalkeeper in the FFA Cup and who also just recently lead Brisbane to win their first ever Canale Cup this week, has attracted the interest of a leading German club and several teams in Belgium’s top league.

This would not be Turnbull’s first taste of European top flight football if a deal was to happen.

The former Australian goalkeeper has already had stints with Belgian giants Standard Liege, Bristol City from England and As Roma in Italy.

The word is that Turnbull is currently in talks with several clubs, and there could be a move for the former Socceroo as soon as January.

Turnbull himself has remained unperturbed by the rumour mill.

“I’m focusing on performing well for Brisbane and making sure we do well in the FFA Cup and obviously the league games” he said.

“I’m not focusing on anything else at this point and whatever happens in the future will not effect my current focus with the Brisbane Strikers.”

Brisbane Strikers goalkeeping coach Mark Askew said Turnbull was a great asset for the club and knows why he is a wanted man.

“Michael is a class act and the skill and experience he brings to the Strikers is invaluable, it is no surprise that top clubs are already interested in gaining his services as he is in my opinion one of the best goalkeepers in the country” he said.

“He has many great years left in his career as he is in superb condition and is so focussed. If he does go overseas it would be a shame for our country to lose such an outstanding talent”

“Michael has played at the highest level, and you can see that from his recent outstanding performances for us in the FFA Cup, including one of the saves of the tournament so far.”

Turnbull will be playing in the final round of 16 of the FFA Cup next month and will be leading the Brisbane Strikers into the NPL final series in two weeks.
