What's getting me down? Thursday night footy and Sticky Ricky

As a fan of the greatest game of all, I initially liked the fact we now only have two days a week without a game being played. Thanks for nothing Tuesday and Wednesday…

However, after last night’s game, I’d be happy to see the back of Thursday Night Footy.

A crowd of under 10,000 fans travelled to see two Sydney sides play in the premier stadium in the city.

What we saw on television was 70,000+ empty seats, a horrible atmosphere and a poor game of football.

The fact the game did not kick off until two minutes to eight o’clock just further illustrates the simple fact the Thursday Night timeslot is purely for ratings.

Channel Nine have mentioned that the TNF timeslot was not created with ratings in mind, but instead in the interests of fans.

A crowd of under 10,000 for a game that would have easily doubled that figure should it had been played in any other time-slot, other than the equally fan unfriendly Monday night.

Social media was scattered with fans of both sides heading to the game, rushing out of work to battle the crowds heading past ANZ Stadium to make the game.

Those same fans were later commenting that they would have to rush home to bed to be able to work again tomorrow morning.

Judging by the official crowd, it looks as though most fans simply do not believe it is worth the effort.

On an aside, Ricky Stuart’s comments that Canberra fans can expect more floggings until they can attract Origin level players, really bothers me.

Isn’t his job to attract players to the club? Shouldn’t it also be his job to turn talented youngsters into Origin quality players?

So now what can Canberra fans expect? Will they be on the end of mass floggings during 2015 as the club has failed to recruit Origin players?

If I were a Canberra fan, I’d be asking questions of the club as to why Stuart, a man on a multi million dollar contract, continues to deflect blame?

How are the Canberra membership team supposed to attract new fans, or even retain current members, after they’ve heard their club will not succeed in the near future as there are no Origin players off-contract?
