AFL playlist: Theme songs for 2014

I recently came across a great idea for an article on The Bleacher Report where the writer assigned a song to each team in the NBA for the 2013-14 season.

I thought I would try apply this to the AFL. So here are the theme songs, selected for the title of the song (not necessarily for the meaning of the song) for each AFL club this season.

Sydney – Run This Town by Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West
The Swans have dominated the competition since Round 4, winning 16 of the past 17 games. Buddy Franklin is in red-hot form. Not only have the Swans run the town this season, they’ve run the league.

Geelong – Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani
The Cats are 7-0 in games where the result has come down to two goals or less. They have clawed their way out of trouble with the help of their superstars, veterans and young guns.

Hawthorn – I’ll Be Alright Without You by Journey
The Hawks have managed the departure of Buddy Franklin incredibly well. They sit third on the ladder and have their three best forwards in the top 10 for goals this season.

Fremantle – Bring It On Home by Led Zeppelin
The Dockers are 10-1 at Paterson’s Stadium this season. Going over to Perth to play Fremantle is a task to be feared by all. Watch out if you play them in the finals.

Port Adelaide – Thunderstruck by AC/DC
At times this season, Port Adelaide has turned on the power switch against their opponents and run them off their feet. However, they had a poor slump of form where many questioned if there was a power shortage in Adelaide.

North Melbourne – Jump Around by House of Pain
The Kangaroos have bounced around all season. They were W-L-W-L-W-L-W, and their inconsistency led to people doubting whether jumping on the Roos’ bandwagon was the right thing to do.

Essendon – This is War by 30 Seconds To Mars
Unfortunately, Essendon versus ASADA has dominated the newspapers all year. The two parties are currently battling it out in court, while Essendon have tried to fight the other teams off for a spot in the finals.

Adelaide – Danger Man by Elvis Presley
The Crows have had an up and down year. But one thing is for sure, Patrick Dangerfield is as exciting as ever and will no doubt lead the Crows as they charge towards September.

Richmond – Eye of the Tiger by Survivor
Seven weeks ago the Tigers were 3-10 and looking woeful. Fast forward, they have won seven in a row and are a real shot at making finals. Can the Tigers do the unthinkable? Or will they finish ninth again and be the ultimate AFL tease.

Collingwood – We Are Young by FUN
After clearing out Darren Jolly, Alan Didak and Ben Johnson last season, the Pies are rebuilding, clearly. This year has been all about the kids. Unfortunately, fielding a young team each week has taken its toll, and it looks like the Pies are out of finals contention.

Gold Coast – Here Without You by 3 Doors Down
The Suns were looking like making the finals for the first time in their short history this year until captain Gary Ablett went down with a shoulder injury in Round 16. The Suns have struggled without their superstar and may have to start looking towards next year.

West Coast – Fly Like An Eagle by Steve Miller Band
The Eagles are another team who have had a fairly inconsistent season. They played very poorly earlier in the season. However, recent form has had them soaring towards the finals. Unfortunately, it looks like their early season blunders may have cost them a spot.

Carlton – Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day
Carlton have had an average year. All signs are pointing towards the future. They have a talented list, but they need to improve if the Blues are to have any chance at winning a premiership in the next four years.

Western Bulldogs – Who Let the Dogs Out by Baha Men
The Bulldogs have been really good, and really bad this year. They are another team who are focusing on the future, but at some point they have to challenge the top eight sides in games. Their fans deserve some success.

Brisbane Lions – Roar by Katy Perry
The Lions seem to be everyone’s favourite up and coming team. They are going through a major rebuild, with club favourites Jonathan Brown and Ashley McGrath retiring this year. They are young, fast and exciting.

Greater Western Sydney – Don’t Stop Believing by Journey
The Giants are on the way up. Although they have only won five games this year, they are starting to develop an elite midfield, to be complimented with a tall, athletic forward line in the future. Giants fans, stick with them.

Melbourne – Help! by The Beatles
Paul Roos has transformed Melbourne into a defensive minded team, but where does the offence come from? They have too many players who can’t kick the ball well enough. After a shocking performance against the Giants, Melbourne have asked the AFL for a priority pick. Potentially, they could have picks two, three or four in this year’s draft if they get compensation for James Frawley.

St Kilda – Started From the Bottom by Drake
St Kilda have gone from being a juggernaut to rebuilding in two years. New coach Alan Richardson is rebuilding this team from scratch. They have played plenty of their kids, but injuries have been cruel. Nick Reiwoldt and Lenny Hayes have been inspiring for the Saints, but it will be a while until Saints fans see their team in the top half of the competition. Wooden spooners most likely for 2014.
