The Greater Western Sydney Giants will be looking to build on a massive win last weekend when they take on the Collingwood Magpies. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4:40pm (AEST).
The Giants are coming off their first ever MCG win last weekend, and they’ll like their chances of knocking off the Magpies for their sixth win of the season.
If they do manage to get the four points, it will mark their second set of back-to-back victories this season, an impressive feat for a side as young as GWS.
The Magpies had a horror night last weekend, the 11-goal loss to the Lions made even worse by injuries to Dayne Beams, Alan Toovey, Heritier Lumumba, Ben Reid and Travis Cloke. Even though they still have a mathematical chance of playing finals this year, it would seem a long shot, especially with a clash against Hawthorn coming in the final round.
The Giants have made two changes for this match, and what massive changes they are. Callan Ward comes out of the side with a calf injury, while Jonathon Patton will miss all of next year as he recovers from a knee reconstruction. Josh Hunt and Tim Golds enter the side for the two stalwarts.
The Magpies have made sweeping changes to their side, with six players coming into this clash. The five aforementioned players will all miss with injury, while Ben Kennedy has been dropped from the side. In comes Jackson Ramsay (playing his first game of AFL footy), Tom Langdon, Sam Dwyer, Josh Thomas, Jesse White and Scott Pendlebury.
Prediction
I’m tipping the home side this weekend.
With the amount of class missing from the Magpies, I expect the Giants to win the midfield battle. The injury to Patton may also be a blessing in disguise for the Giants, as it allows Tom Boyd to be the feature tall in a dangerous looking forward line.
Also, you get the feeling that the Magpies have thrown in the towel for season 2014, so they may not be up for this one.
