NRL top eight predictions

We have come to the last round of the regular season but still we are not at all certain of the final outlook of the top eight.

As teams in positions 11 to 16 won’t make a difference to the top eight, they aren’t really relevant in the discussion. However, two teams in those positions – the Raiders (who play the Eels) and Titans (against the Bulldogs) – can have an influence on the finals make-up.

Rabbitohs versus Roosters
Two things are certain in this match. First, the loser will finish third no matter how the other games pan out. Second, the winner will be guaranteed a top two finish. However, the top two will only be decided after the Eagles and Cowboys match.

Storm versus Broncos
The result of this match will rely upon other games to make a difference to the top eight. If the Broncos win this match, they will end up seventh (or sixth if the Bulldogs lose to the Titans), with Melbourne or the Warriors – if they beat the Panthers – in eighth.

However, if the Storm win they will remain at sixth and could be a chance of finishing higher if the Panthers and Cowboys lose their games.

Raiders versus Eels
While the Raiders are definitely out of any top eight contentions, Parramatta will have something to play for if the Storm beat the Broncos on Friday. If that is the case, an Eels win could see them slip into the finals if the Warriors lose.

Cowboys versus Eagles
If Manly win then they secure the minor premiership, but if they lose they will drop to second. The Cowboys will finish in either fourth or fifth if they win, but they could drop down to seventh if they lose.

Titans versus Bulldogs
Much like the Raiders versus Eels match, the Titans will only be playing for pride. But a win for Canterbury will move them to fifth (if Melbourne and the Cowboys lose).

Panthers versus Warriors
Penrith will finish fourth if they win, but a lose could see them fall to sixth. The Warriors need a win to confirm eighth place, but a loss could see them scrape through on goal difference if the Broncos are also defeated.

The Tigers versus Sharks and Knights versus Dragons games are irrelevant.

There are a lot of ifs and buts in there, which goes to show how competitive this season has been. We can only wait and see what the final eight will look like.

I’m tipping the top eight to finish like this: Roosters, Sea Eagles, Rabbitohs, Panthers, Cowboys, Storm, Bulldogs and Eels.

What do you think the final ladder will be?
