Melbourne City’s A-League revolution is raking in the fans, with the club setting a new membership benchmark more than a month before the season begins.

On the back of the club’s new ownership and player signings including David Villa, Damien Duff, Robert Koren and Aaron Mooy, City have signed up 7311 members for the season ahead, beating last year’s figure.

Coach John van `t Schip said the support bodes well.

“We’re all very excited about the season ahead, but more importantly I’d like to send a big thank you to all our members who have signed up so far,” the Dutchman said.

“They are the lifeblood of the club and with their help we look forward pushing towards the 10,000 mark.”

World Cup winner Villa is expected to join the side in the coming weeks.

His 10-game guest stint with the club is expected to start in October.

His signing has helped install City as favourites to win the league in their first season after shedding the Melbourne Heart moniker.

Melbourne City will play in white kits with a light blue stripe this season following their takeover by the owners of English Premier League club Manchester City.

City begin their A-League season with an away fixture against Sydney FC on October 11, with Melbourne-based fans to see their club in action for the first time on Sunday October 19 when City play Newcastle Jets at AAMI Park.
