Selwood won't comment on AFL clash

Geelong captain Joel Selwood has refused to comment on a clash with North Melbourne’s Brent Harvey that will attract AFL match review panel scrutiny.

Harvey has a nervous weekend ahead of Monday’s panel findings to see whether he is cleared to play in the semi-final against Sydney at ANZ Stadium.

He and Selwood clashed in the second term of Friday night’s pulsating semi-final win over the Cats.

Soon after the running tussle Selwood left the ground with a cut above his right eye.

It is understood Selwood was angry as he ran to the Cats bench and spoke to the emergency umpire.

Selwood was asked post-match about whether he had needed stitches and what had happened to cause the cut.

“I’ve got no idea and I won’t speak about it,” Selwood said.

All Harvey would say post-match was that the pair had a clash of heads.

Indeed, the match review panel may well rule that any contact was accidental after they scrutinise video of the tussle.

A big problem for the Kangaroos veteran is that he returned from a three-game suspension to play in Friday night’s final.

That means if the panel decides to take action against Harvey, his poor record would mean a near-certain suspension from the preliminary final.

But immediately after their memorable win over the Cats, Harvey’s only emotion was elation.

“It’s an amazing feeling, we’re off to a prelim – it’s great for our football club,” he said.

“I was out for three weeks sitting in the coaches’ box watching it and just to see the way they go about their football, the way they prepare during the week, it’s a credit to them.

“It’s a good team going places.”

Kangaroos’ coach Brad Scott said he had not seen footage of the clash between Harvey and Selwood.

“We’ll let that all play out. I’ve just told ‘Boomer’ (Harvey) to go about his recovery and not worry about it,” Scott said.

Selwood was also proud of Geelong after they recovered from 32 points down in the last tem to nearly tie the match and force extra time.

“One thing you can’t write off is the Geelong spirit and we showed that – we just showed it a little bit too late,” Selwood said.
