The Hong Kong racing season begins with a bang today, and here are a couple of horses that are likely to make a good of it on the opening day of the new racing season.

But first of all a quick check on the weather that is mainly fine apart from isolated showers. Hot during the day with a maximum temperature of around 32 degrees. Moderate easterly winds. (Hong Kong Observatory)

Track: Good (“A” Course)

40-15 Class Five Handicap
Race 2, No. 2 Sparkling Sword

He wasn’t beaten far by Golden Deer (who now races at the top of Class Three) three starts back and was entitled to weaken after being caught wide throughout. Should find this much easier and cut back to 1200 metres suits. California Rock, who won a trial leading up to this looks the biggest danger.

HKSAR Chief Executive’s Cup
Race 3, No. 7 Peniaphobia

Produced one of the runs of the season when rallying to win at Happy Valley after looking beaten and has been rapidly progressing through the grades since. He gets in on the minimum here and looks destined for greater things. Interesting to note that in the last ten runnings of this race six winners have carried 119 pounds or less and only one favourite has won (Lucky Nine in 2010).

100-80 Class Two Handicap
Race 9, No. 5 Bundle Of Joy

His narrow defeat by Peniaphobia in June reads very well for this and his key rival My Little Friend is drawn the wrong part of the track. He arguably should have won more races last season had he had more luck with his draws.

100-80 Class Two Handicap
Race 10, No. 13 Multivictory

Was very brave to hold on for second behind the promising Luger after setting a very solid tempo. Drawn much better this time and gets a handy claim with Alvin Ng engaged. He should make the running and prove hard to run down.
