Penrith whiz kid squeezes out Simmons

It was always going to take something special to keep try-scoring veteran David Simmons out of Penrith’s NRL finals campaign.

But whiz-kid winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak proved in one match-defining play in the Panthers’ 19-18 upset over the Sydney Roosters on Saturday night, that he’s more than special.

Touted as the most naturally gifted Penrith junior since Brad Fittler, Watene-Zelezniak’s freakish effort to keep a Jamie Soward kick in play for Dean Whare to score has propelled the mountain men to within one game of the grand final.

It’s also virtually guaranteed Watene-Zelezniak his spot on the end of the backline for the big preliminary final and whatever might follow for the Panthers.

Simmons has been hampered by injuries for most of 2014, but last year he finished as the NRL’s leading try-scorer with 19.

The former Cronulla Sharks flyer is a professional finisher and is now fully fit and available for a recall.

But the case for Watene-Zelezniak is overwhelming.

“I thought to myself, this is my opportunity,” said Watene-Zelezniak post-match.

“I’ve got to take it with both hands.”

The 19-year-old has scored six tries in nine games in his debut season, but in every department he oozes class.

However, Watene-Zelezniak is quick to give credit to Simmons for helping him adjust to first grade and says he would understand if coach Ivan Cleary gave him the tap on the shoulder and went with the experienced option instead.

“Dave is an awesome player and either way I’d be happy just to see the boys come away with a win,” he said.

“Dave Simmons does the job and he’s better than what everyone thinks.

“He’s helped me out a lot through this. He just gave me tips from the game going up against Daniel Tupou and what to do.

“I don’t think it’s being picked against Simmo, I think I’ve just taken this opportunity. I don’t know what the thoughts are with Ivan.”

Hard-nosed lock Adam Docker will also be available for selection for Penrith in the preliminary final.
