Cycling star Simon Gerrans will lead Australia’s charge at this month’s road world championships in Ponferrada, Spain.
Gerrans, fresh from an historic world tour victory double in Canada, was on Monday named in Cycling Australia’s nine-strong elite men’s team alongside veteran Cadel Evans.
Joining him will be three other Orica-GreenEDGE riders, including Michael Matthews, a stage winner at the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana, as well as time trial specialist Rohan Dennis of BMC and Lotto-Belisol’s Adam Hansen.
Richie Porte is a notable omission, having ended his season early due to illness.
Porte was included in the initial squad but ruled himself out at the weekend as he recovers from the ill health that has dogged him at times through this season.
Mark Renshaw also missed the cut, despite his Tour of Britain stage win last week.
Australia has also named a strong six-person women’s team, headlined by Tiffany Cromwell and Rachel Neylan.
Neylan won silver in 2012 but missed last year’s world championships.
Australian time trial champion Felicity Wardlaw again missed selection after being overlooked for the national Glasgow Commonwealth Games team earlier this year.
The world championships run from September 21-28.
