MATCH RESULT:

The clash of German and English champions proved tight as Bayern Munich prove a touch too good for Manchester City with a cracking goal from Boatang in the 89th minute proving the difference.

Manchester City can hold their heads up high, particularly Hart who proved tonight why he’s England’s No.1 in goal.

They can now look forward to an easier group game against CSKA Moskva who went down convincingly 5-1 to Roma, a team who may well prove to be Group E surprise packets.

Matching it with Munich, Manchester City should take a lot of positives from this game in which Bayern showed their class, patience and ultimate ability to find the back of the net from a variety of sources.

Despite moments of mediocrity, both teams showcased why they’re deemed European heavyweights.

FINAL SCORE:
Bayern Munich 1
Manchester City 0

Bayern Munich will host Manchester City at Allianz Stadium on Thursday morning. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 4:45am (AEST) to find out who will get their Champions League campaign off to the right start.

Bayern Munich will be looking to improve upon last year’s disappointing semi-final exit to eventual winners Real Madrid. Meanwhile Manchester City will be eager to kick off their European campaign on the right foot having only made the Round of 16 last year.

With both teams still settling into their league campaigns, after each claiming their respective competitions last season, consistency has yet to be achieved by either.

Bayern, although sitting pretty in second in the Bundesliga, haven’t been overly convincing in their first three outings, winning two and drawing one.

Manchester City have similarly been out of sorts having only claimed seven points from their first four games to slot in at just 5th in the Premier League. A shock 1-0 loss to Stoke City on 30th August had alarm bells ringing at Eithad before a more convincing 2-2 draw with a determined Arsenal outfit last match day.

Bayern and City have become somewhat familiar with each other recently after being drawn into the same group last year.

Both teams claimed a win against the other last time around only for Bayern to top the group on goal difference leaving Manchester City to face Barcelona in the Round of 16.

If City were to score one more goal in their 3-2, come from behind win over Bayern at Allianz in their last group game, they would have secured top spot. Strangely both Bayern and City won their respective group games against each other last year away from home.

It’s a different kettle of fish this time around however with both sides fielding their share of new faces and not fielding some notable absentees.

The home side will be without German defender Badstuber, along with the injured Martinez, Schweinsteiger and Rafinha. They will though likely feature an in form Ribery who scored on the weekend to mark his return from injury and stellar new recruits Lewandowski and Xabi Alonso.

Manchester City will be without defender Zabaleta who is out through suspension while an injury cloud remains over back up striker Jovetic, who is in his own right a talented player.

The first of six group games for both sides, this first match may just prove to be a sparring contest with neither committing themselves fully.

But with European form hard to come by, neither team will pass up the opportunity to get their Champions League campaign off on the right foot, pending the other starting it off on the wrong one.

I suspect though that both will settle for simply just landing on two feet as they attempt to shrug off early season inconsistency, sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
