Port Adelaide young gun Chad Wingard has beaten some strong competition to win the 2014 mark of the year award at the 2014 Brownlow Medal night.

Wingard’s fellow nominees were Carlton’s Levi Casboult, who took a huge pack mark against the Hawks, and Collingwood’s Jamie Elliott, who bravely fronted up against the Cats to take one the of strongest grabs of the season.

Wingard’s mark, however, was a clear standout from the moment it was taken.

You know, when you see a mark, that it’s just going to be the top for that year. This year Wingard had that moment, as he takes off onto the back of his St Kilda opponent to launch into the stratosphere and take a momentous grab. But enough talking about it, let’s take a look at it.

A deserving winner, you’d have to say. It gives an insight into what we should expect from Wingard, who is still just 21 years old.

It also marks the first time since 2002, one of the years in the Lions’ remarkable treble, that a club has won both mark of the year and goal of the year, with Matt White taking out that award with his epic run down the boundary line against Richmond. You can watch that goal here.

But the runners up were almost as spectacular, if for different reasons.

Jamie Elliott’s nominated grab was nothing if not brave, launching himself into the thick of the action to take the ball on his chest and win his team a crucial goal against the Cats.

Levi Casboult’s mark was almost as spectacular as Wingard’s effort, but not quite. He smashed his way into the pack, rather than launching himself onto the opponent as was his Port Adelaide compatriot’s way.

But to take a strong mark over his head, in the middle of the pack is very impressive. Watch it below.

So what do you think Roarers? Was Wingard’s the best? Or was there another you think was worthy of winning the coveted prize?
