AFL umpires not won over by Lewis, Gray

They were the Brownlow medal betting plunges, but AFL umpires had limited interest in Robbie Gray and Jordan Lewis’ breakout seasons.

Gray and Lewis both started the season at odds of $501 to win the league’s most coveted individual honour.

On Monday night, they had shortened to $6 and $9 respectively.

Port Adelaide utility Gray was named the AFL Coaches Association’s champion player earlier this year.

Hawthorn on-baller Lewis earned his inaugural All-Australian selection in 2014.

But when it came to the Brownlow medal, neither could make a significant impression.

Lewis finished in a tie for 11th with 15 votes, while Gray was tied 13th on 14 votes.

Lewis’ first votes in the count came in round 10, when he was awarded two in the Hawks’ loss to Port Adelaide.

Gray had tallied a total of four votes after 10 rounds.

Their Brownlow hopes were essentially over then, with early pacesetter Gary Ablett already boasting 17 votes at the same point.

Lewis, who suffered a badly corked leg in his side’s preliminary final win over the Power, had wanted to skip the ceremony to focus on recovering for the grand final.

“I did ask whether I could miss the night to recover my leg,” Lewis told radio station 3AW.

“But it was all about how I pulled up this morning. I pulled up really well.

“All I was thinking about was how I could recover to the maximum of my ability.”

Lewis suggested he was in no doubt for Saturday’s season decider against Sydney.

“Leg’s really good. I’m a bit embarrassed there has been so much commentary about a corked leg,” he told the Seven Network during Monday’s count.

“Hopefully I’ll train (on Tuesday), if not Thursday.”
