Sportswriters Brett McKay and Ryan O’Connell are gearing up for a massive weekend of grand and preliminary finals in episode 54 of the Cheap Seats podcast.

In this episode, Ryan proposes a rule change involving scrums and half a tackle count, while Brett’s argument against said rule change boils down to “that’s how it’s always been”.

Episode 54 talking points:

  • Ryan’s stunning debut in #YouBloodyIdiots
  • #AskTheCheapSeats: unworthy prelim final qualifiers, the possibility of an unbearable co-host should the Swans and Bulldogs win, and the unstoppable Melbourne Rising
  • NRL finals: Roosters hold out North Queensland but the conspiracy theory remains, Canterbury too good for Manly and an age-old rule helps along the way, and Wayne Bennett returns to the Broncos and says it will be his last coaching job
  • AFL: Essendon thumped in the Federal Court, Sydney thump North Melbourne on Friday night, Hawthorn hold on against fast-finishing Port Adelaide, and West Coast midfielder Matt Priddis wins the Brownlow
  • Rugby: the Wallabies and All Blacks head off in different directions but with new pressure, the NRC wrap
  • Sports briefs including Formula One and cricket
  • Brett’s Tweet of the Week, and Ryan’s bricks-and-mortar certainty for the weekend.
