Gold Coast have lured Terry Matterson from North Queensland to be Neil Henry’s assistant coach at the NRL club.
Matterson is the first appointment to Henry’s backroom staff as the 51-year-old continues his shake-up of the embattled Titans.
The pair previously worked together when Henry was coach of the Cowboys, with Matterson ending a six-year stint as head coach of English Super League team Castleford to move to Townsville in 2011.
The ex-Brisbane forward, who also coached the United States at last year’s World Cup, stayed at the Cowboys following Henry’s departure last year but will now re-unite with his old boss at the Titans.
“I’m looking forward to working with Terry again,” Henry said.
“He has had a wide depth of experience as a player and a coach and has a lot to offer the Titans.
“He has had an extensive record in Australia and England and a great understanding of the game and he’ll be a real asset to us.”
Earlier this month the Titans announced former Queensland State of Origin player Trevor Gillmeister would be leaving the club after eight years as an assistant to foundation coach John Cartwright, who resigned in August.
Gillmeister says he’s hoping to stay on as an assistant coach to Mal Meninga with the Queensland Origin team despite his sacking by the Titans.
It’s not known at this stage whether Henry will be chasing a second assistant to fill the vacancy created by his elevation to the head coach’s role.
