UFC178 may lack the draw of a legitimate big-name star, but it is an event stacked with high-quality fights, which ooze excitement and have some intriguing story-lines to boot.

In the main event we have Demetrious Johnson aiming to tighten his grip on the UFC’s stacked Flyweight division at the expense of plucky challenger Chris Cariaso, who is carrying a three-fight win-streak into this bout.

Both fighters bring a solid, well-rounded game to the table, with the normal blitz of ninja-like speed we have come to expect from the 125-pound division. Look for Johnson to grind out a late finish.

The next bout is possibly the most anticipated on the whole card, as human firecracker Don Cerrone takes on former Bellator 155-pound king Eddie Alvarez.

Both fighters are looking to put in a performance which will catch the eye of the UFC top brass for the next shot at the title.

In Cerrone we have a high level striker with a slick ground game and a penchant for finishing opponents – he has finished each of his last four opponents by KO or submission. Alvarez however has been widely considered the best 155-pound fighter outside the UFC and has been gnashing his teeth for the chance to prove he is the best in the world.

This scrap is a hot tip for fight of the night as both men look to impose their will. Alvarez to win in a close decision.

In the next bout American Justin Poirier takes on brash Irishman Connor McGregor. Both will come to swing from the opening bell, having both enjoyed success on their feet in previous fights.

McGregor has certainly proven he can punch, but Poirier has tighter defence and will use this to his advantage as he hunts for an early KO victory.

Further down the card former 135-pound champion Dominick Cruz is looking to get back to fighting against the always tough Takeya Mizugaki.

Cruz had a successful reign as champion which was derailed by a knee injury which kept him out of the cage for almost three years and cost him the title.

Mitzugaki however has been active and successful through that period. Look for him to grind down the ring-rusty Cruz en route to an upset win.

In other notable tussles, all-American hero Tim Kennedy squares off against Yoel Romero, Brian Ebersole will match John Howard, and Manny Gamuryan will fight Cody Gibson.

In probably one of the deepest cards this year, the UFC has put together an event which will please the masses and hardcore fans alike.
