Reports today indicate that the Women’s Gridiron competition LFL Australia (Legends Football League) will not have a 2014/15 season, with the lack of a broadcast partner playing a part in the decision.

The Seven Network was the broadcast partner for the 2013/14 edition of the competition, but they pulled out as host broadcaster in June this year.

The competition had four teams in its inaugural year, with the New South Wales Surge, Queensland Brigade, Victoria Maidens and Western Australia Angels all taking part.

There was plenty of criticism of the decision to broadcast the league initially, with an online petition for Seven to stop broadcasting the games generating over 2000 signatures.

Even Roarers got in on the act, with Ned Balme penning an article last year about the various virtues, or lack thereof, of the competition.

The attire of the player has long been a sore point for the Australian public, and there was backlash when the League first announced it was coming to Australia.

Formerly known as the ‘Lingerie Football League’, it rebranded in 2013 to the current name, and also changed the uniforms of the players.

Even still, its arrival in Australia attracted some negative attention.

There is reportedly still a broadcast deal in place for the 2015-16 season, but that will be placed in doubt if reports of the cancellation of this season turn out to be true.
