Winger Joe Burgess’ last-gasp try earned Wigan a Super League grand final showdown with St Helens as they claimed a dramatic 16-12 win over Warrington.

Defending champions Wigan had to do it the hard way in one of the great qualifying semi-finals before they could finally look forward to facing local rivals St Helens at Old Trafford on October 11.

In a rematch of last year’s grand final, Joel Tomkins’ try had put a dominant Warriors in front in the first half at the DW Stadium on Friday.

But Joel Monaghan responded just before the break for Warrington and when Gareth O’Brien scored soon after the interval the visitors were somehow in front.

Anthony Gelling restored Wigan’s lead but Stefan Ratchford kicked a goal to level the scores at 12-12 with the clock ticking down and a golden point looking likely.

Both sides made a hash of a number of drop goal attempts in the closing moments and at the end it was the impressive Burgess who cut in off the left wing to score.
