Formula One driver Jules Bianchi remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital following his horrific crash on Sunday at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.

His family have issued a statement explaining he suffered a ‘diffuse axonal injury’ and remains in intensive care. This type of devastating trauma results from the brain moving back and forth within the skull as a result of extreme acceleration or deceleration.

“This is a very difficult time for our family, but the messages of support and affection for Jules from all over the world have been a source of great comfort to us. We would like to express our sincere appreciation,” the statement read.

“The hospital will continue to monitor and treat Jules and further medical updates will be provided when appropriate.”

The 25-year-old lost control of his car during Sunday’s rain-shortened race on the outside of the Dunlop curve at turn seven, the same turn where Sauber driver Adrian Sutil had aquaplaned off and hit the tyre barrier one lap earlier.

Bianchi travelled across the run-off area and collided with the tractor crane being used to remove Sutil’s car.

The Frenchman, who made his Formula One debut with Marussia in 2013 and is part of the Ferrari Driver Academy, was unconscious at the scene and taken from the circuit to Mie General Medical Center in Yokkaichi.
