Austria’s loss is Sydney FC’s gain after the Sky Blues marquee import Marc Janko was sent off in a Euro 2016 football qualifying game.

Janko scored the matchwinner and was sent off in Austria’s 2-1 victory over hosts Moldova.

He scored from a header in the 51st minute before he was given a red card with eight minutes remaining following an altercation with Moldova goalkeeper Ilie Cebanu in Chisinau on Thursday.

The 31-year-old’s red card rules Janko out of Austria’s Euro qualifier against Montenegro on (Monday AEDT).

He will however be available to make his A-League debut for Sydney FC against Western Sydney Wanderers on October 18.

Striker Janko was named as Alessandro Del Piero’s replacement at Sydney FC for the 2014-15 A-League season after signing a one-year deal with the Sky Blues.

His dismissal means he will head back to Sydney earlier than anticipated and have more time to prepare for the round two local derby.

“I’ve already spoken to him, he’s bitterly disappointed with the red card he’s got,” Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold said on Friday.

“The quality of bringing a player like him out to this country, he’s played in a European championship qualifier.

“He’s earned them a penalty, he scored a great header and he got sent off in the 82nd minute.

“It’s sad for Austria and it’s sad for him, but a positive for us.

“Instead of getting him back next Thursday, we’re getting him back Monday, so it’s a bonus for us”.
