Adelaide forward Jason Porplyzia has announced his retirement, bringing an end to his 10-year AFL career.

Porplyzia, 29, said the time was right to hang up the boots after playing 130 games and kicking 180 goals to be ranked 10th in Adelaide’s all-time leading goalkicking list.

“This was a tough decision, leaving a club full of so many great people,” he said.

“However, I am also looking forward to the next chapter of my life and exploring my passion for the physical performance field … A special thanks to Neil Craig, who gave me my first opportunity to realise my childhood dream and play AFL.”

Porplyzia spent 12 months on the Adelaide rookie list in 2003 but was delisted before he could break into the senior side.

He was given a second chance when he was picked up by the Crows in the 2006 pre-season draft and made his AFL debut in round five against the Western Bulldogs that year.

Crows head of football David Noble described Porplyzia as a favourite of fans and teammates alike.

“Jason was courageous, team orientated and most importantly, a quality individual who was a coach’s dream,” he said.

“He also possessed a strong overhead mark and was one of the most reliable shots on goal.

“Unfortunately, injuries prevented him from playing more games, particularly, early in his career.”
