The 2014 AFL Trade and Free Agency period has taken yet another unexpected twist today as 2013’s no 1 draft pick Tom Boyd has requested a trade to the Western Bulldogs after just nine games and eight goals in a single year at Greater Western Sydney.

Little news to have broken with the Tom Boyd trade request dominating headlines.
However, a trade between Brisbane and Geelong for Allen Christensen is likely to be completed within the hour, with Brisbane set to give up pick 21 for the Christensen, who played in the Cats’ 2011 flag.

Now this is big news. The Western Bulldogs have announced via Twitter that last year’s no. 1 draft pick, 200cm key forward Tom Boyd, has requested a trade home to Victoria, with the Bulldogs his preferred destination.
The Club confirm we’ve been informed by Tom Boyd’s management he’ll seek a trade from @GWS_Giants to continue his career at the Bulldogs.
While the Giants have stated that they will not trade Boyd under any circumstances, they may change their tune if the Bulldogs state that it is the only way they will gain Griffen this trade period.
The no. 1 draft pick Boyd kicked eight goals in nine games in his first year with Greater Western Sydney but looks likely to develop into the focal-point key forward that the Bulldogs have been lacking ever since the retirement of Barry Hall.
My Take: Gutsy move by the Bulldogs to pinch one of the Giants young guns in response to the Griffen defection. Can’t wait to see how this one plays out.

The second week of trade period begins today and is expected to be one of the busiest in recent times.
Only three trades were successfully completed in the first week of the trade period, and there are as many as twenty players still looking to join new clubs before trade period officially ends at 2pm this coming Thursday.
Free Agency is officially over for the year with five confirmed movements, however there is the chance for delisted players to move as Free Agents later in the year.
Dayne Beams remains one of the most interesting names in this year’s trade period as the premiership midfielder continues to seek a trade to Brisbane, despite the Lions and the Magpies failing so far to strike a deal for him.
It is understood that Brisbane may be willing to increase their offer to be picks 5 and 25, along with young midfielder Jack Crisp, which could be enough to break the deadlock despite the Magpies reportedly calling off negotiations at 5pm on Friday.
Also in the balance is the future of Paddy Ryder for whom negotiations have stalled after the AFL blocked a plan that would see Essendon void his contract and let him become a Free Agent. With the Free Agency period now over, this certainly will not come to pass.
What is not certain is just how Ryder will make his way to Port Adelaide – if at all. He has ruled out staying at Essendon entirely, with his manager stating last week that Ryder may retire from AFL altogether if not granted a trade.
Making waves also is Ryan Griffen whose stunning request for a trade to Greater Western Sydney set off a series of events leading to the resignation of Bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney on Friday. Bulldogs president Peter Gordon has said he hopes Griffen remains at the club to fulfil his contract, but a trade looks much more likely.
The confirmed movements so far are as such:
Jarrad Waite, Shaun Higgins signed to North Melbourne.
James Frawley signed to Hawthorn.
Nick Malceski signed to Gold Coast.
James Gwilt signed to Essendon.
Jonothan O’Rourke and pick 43 traded from Greater Western Sydney to Hawthorn for picks 19 and 40.
Jeff Garlett and pick 83 traded from Carlton to Melbourne for picks 61 and 79.
Joel Patfull traded from Brisbane to Greater Western Sydney for pick 21.
