Forgive him, for he knows not what he does. That’s the charitable view of the Hayne drain, of the Hayne-train-for-gridiron-success in the US.
A generous response would be that as one of the chosen ones, Jarryd plans to spread truth, justice and the Parramatta way among the extended flock.
But there is another view.
Hayne’s forsaking of his calling is the greatest Australian sporting tragedy since the deaths of Les Darcy and Phar Lap.
Having succumbed to the forces of darkness, Hayne has betrayed the one true faith, his club, his district, his state and his country.
Et tu, Brute? Et tu Jarryd? Express it in French, Latin, Leviticus or Rugby League Week, this is the greatest betrayal of them all.
The irony is that at the same time as Hayne has cast himself into the wilderness, a heathen in Anthony Whatmough has seen the light and is heading for the Garden of Eden, Parramatta Park.
If there is one ray of hope, it is this. At least Hayne has not been visited by the Anti-Christ and is going to Manly, where the fires of hell one day await the treacherous Jamie Lyon.
Parramatta fans can only pray for Hayne, and imagine the day when he returns as the prodigal son; chastened, humbled and begging for forgiveness.
