Jets happy to fly under the radar

Newcastle Jets were a mere footnote in most A-League pundits’ season predictions.

And it wasn’t lost on Jets coach Phil Stubbins.

“That’s been a bit of a driving force for us,” Stubbins said after his side claimed a 1-1 away draw against Melbourne City.

“We’ve come together as a group and I’ve spoken all along about changing the mindset, attitudes and approach of everyone.

“If anyone was to come and witness what we’re doing over there, you’d find it a very vibrant place.”

The Jets impressed against City, central defender Kew Jaliens and goalkeeper Mark Birighitti doing well to defuse David Villa until the Spaniard struck the equaliser in the 87th minute.

“The boys put in a solid shift .. we’re slightly disappointed but also pretty happy,” Stubbins said.

Stubbins’ charges face a tough start to the season, with resurfacing work at Hunter Stadium for the Asian Cup forcing them on the road for the opening four rounds.

Football Federation Australia has made it a particularly unforgiving stretch.

The Jets tackle the Phoenix in Wellington on Sunday, then travel to Perth where they take on table-topping Glory the following Saturday.

Stubbins noted his side had not “been dealt a good hand”, but insisted they were up for the challenge.
