The Sahara Force India Formula One team has announced that Nico Hulkenberg will be retained for the upcoming 2015 Formula One season.

Hulkenberg – who is currently sitting eighth in the drivers’ championship – is the first driver to be confirmed by the Silverstone-based squad for next year.

“It’s good to confirm my plans for next season,” the 27 year-old German said.

“This is a team I know extremely well and we’ve enjoyed a great year together with some special results.

“The team has big ambitions and I believe we can have a competitive package once again next year. We have a strong partner in Mercedes and everyone in the team is motivated and hungry for more success.

“I have a good feeling for 2015 and there is a lot to be excited about as we try to build on the results we have achieved this year.”

So far this season, Hulkenberg has scored points at all but three races and is the highest placed driver in the standings without having stood on the podium.

His current teammate Sergio Perez in turn has finished on the podium this year, with a stunning third place finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix, which delivered the team only their second-ever podium.

However, the Mexican has only scored 47 points as supposed to Hulkenberg’s 76.

Hulkenberg is no stranger to the ‘silly season’ as for the past few years he has been linked to drives with the likes of Ferrari and even Lotus towards the end of last year.

In the end, for 2014 the German made a return to Force India after a horrendous season at the Sauber team during 2013.

Force India team boss Vijay Mallya praised his driver of soon to be three seasons, and said “We know him extremely well: he’s a true racer and he knows how to motivate the team. I am convinced he is one of the best talents on the grid and I am proud that he will continue to race in the colours of Sahara Force India.”

In terms of the other seat next to Hulkenberg, Perez has indicated that would prefer to remain with Force India, as have the team.

Though while there are some high profile availabilities at teams such as McLaren, Ferrari and possibly Lotus, it is almost certain that Fernando Alonso and newly announced free-agent Sebastian Vettel will slot into those seats.
