MATCH RESULT:

Adelaide United 3
Sydney FC 1

It was a game of two halves tonight. Adelaide United dominated the first half, before Sydney mounted a spirited comeback in the second period.

An Alex Brosque goal got them back on level terms, and it looked like they could get ahead before a controversial red card against Petkovic saw the home side reduced to ten men.

Adelaide have claimed the second spot in the semi finals of the inaugural FFA Cup, while Sydney FC will have to regroup as they travel to Brisbane to clash with the defending champions on Friday night.

Full credit to the Reds who deserved the win tonight, but Sydney showed that they do have the squad depth that they were after.

They will be annoyed with the result, but showed that they can play under pressure.

A-League heavyweights Sydney FC and Adelaide United put it all on the line tonight as they battle for the second spot in the semi-finals of the inaugural FFA Cup. Join The Roar from 7:30pm (AEDT) for live scores and coverage.

Just 72 hours after an emotion-charged derby victory over the Western Sydney Wanderers, Sydney FC will have to do it all again as they take on Adelaide United.

Sydney FC qualified for tonight’s quarter–finals off the back of wins against Melbourne City and Sydney United, while Adelaide had a slightly tougher path facing A-League opponents Wellington Phoenix, and Brisbane Roar.

Both clubs have started the league season in reasonably good form. Sydney FC managed a gritty draw against Melbourne City – a game that even their most faithful fans would have suggested they would have lost last campaign, and a dramatic victory over cross-town rivals last weekend.

It’s early days, but under Graham Arnold and new fitness coach Andrew Clark the Sky Blues look leaner, fitter, and hungrier than they did last campaign.

Adelaide for their part are starting to play the type of football that coach Josep Gombau envisioned when he arrived in Australia.

They look a happy team and after a confidence boosting win away to the Brisbane Roar in Round 1, followed by a 1-all draw against the Melbourne Victory in front of over thirty thousand fans last start they have a positive base on which to build.

How Sydney can win:
Sydney have the cattle to win, but which cattle take the pitch is the million dollar question. Although they would never admit it publicly, Sydney will have half an eye on their Friday meeting with Brisbane Roar, and won’t want to risk burning out players this early in the season.

If Sydney can score early then they are a big chance of winning the match. Look for some hungry youngsters looking to make an impact and prove to Arnold that they are worthy for consideration in the first team.

How Adelaide can win:
By all rights Adelaide should win this match as the schedule on paper certainly falls in their favour. They have had a four-day break and don’t play again until Sunday, while Sydney played an intense derby on Saturday night and then travel to play the defending champions on Friday.

The Reds will be looking to play an up-tempo passing game that they have showed in both starts this season. They will be a little deflated after conceding so late to the Victory, and will be keen to erase that frustration quickly.

Likely Result:
Adelaide United have a good record over Sydney FC notching up two victories and a draw from their last three meetings. This game should be an entertaining and open game as both sides look to assert their dominance and push for a spot in the final four.

TIP: Adelaide 2-1
