MATCH RESULT:

Just when we thought Manchester United were getting into a rhythm and had started to build some momentum they appear to be back to the drawing board as they escape the Hawthorns with a 2-2 draw against West Brom.

The result was fair, and depending on how you look at it, United may count themselves lucky to have come away from the game with a point after equalising twice throughout the second half through substitute Marouane Fellaini and holding midfielder Daley Blind.

It was different clowns, same circus, for United defensively as the introduction of Phil Jones did little to stem their recent defensive woes.

United had the majority of possession but were still subject to lapses defensively and it proved to be costly once again as they set a club record for most away games without a win at six.

United could hardly be held accountable for the Baggies opening goal as Sessegnon’s shot would have beaten 95% of defences in world football but Berahino’s was a different story.

A slick pass-and-move play between Berahino and captain Chris Brunt saw Berahino slide through United’s defence with acres of space around him before advancing towards goal and neatly finishing past David De Gea.

While they seemed to be coping better with general play better, they are still very much prone to defensive lapses and it is something Van Gaal is going to have to address immediately going forward as they host a ruthless Chelsea side next weekend.

The introduction of Fellaini and Falcao seemed to spark United in the second half but for large parts of the game were unable to break down a stringent and sturdy West Brom defence.

For West Brom, they will be bitterly disappointed as they could have not have executed a more perfect game plan to beat United as the chance to register a win against United for the first time in almost 30 years was snatched from them at the death.

Despite claiming only one point from a possible six in their last two games, The Baggies will move on from this game with great confidence knowing very well that they are more than capable of playing attacking football with some of the league’s best.

Saido Berahino was on target once again and extends his season tally to six goals in eight Premier League games while Stephane Sessegnon and captain Chris Brunt were also highly impressive.

West Brom host Crystal Palace next week while United entertain Chelsea at Old Trafford as both sides will look to get back to winning ways.

FINAL SCORE:
West Brom 2
Manchester United 2
