Sydney FC defender Nikola Petkovic will miss his side’s A-League clash with Brisbane on Friday night after the match review panel dismissed a review of his controversial red-carding in the Sky Blues’ loss to Adelaide on Tuesday night.

Petkovic was sent off for a high tackle on Fabio Ferreira three minutes from time in the side’s 3-1 FFA Cup quarter-final loss to Adelaide.

Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold slammed referee Ben Williams’ decision to red-card Petkovic, labelling it an “embarrassment”.

Arnold said Petkovic’s send-off had effectively decided the game as Adelaide went on to win in extra time.

“I feel for the fans and the viewers and most of all I feel sorry for the players,” Arnold said in his post-match press conference.

“I made my feelings known in the emotion of the game.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen a red card given after play on … they both get up and chased the ball.”

Football Federation Australia referred the decision to the match review panel to determine whether an error had been made.

However the MRP ruled the mandatory one-match suspension would stand.
