2014 Cox Plate: Best bets for day one of the carnival

On a tough card to kick-off the two-day Cox Plate Carnival at Moonee Valley on Friday night, there’s one bet that looks a great way to get your bank bulging for Cox Plate Day.

Tawteen, the David Hayes/Tom Dabernig-trained filly, has been terrific this campaign, starting four times for two wins and two placings at Group 3 level.

First up at Bendigo over 1100m she was too classy for a BM70 field, winning after overcoming traffic problems at the start.

Second at at MV over 1200m she scorched along out in front and just kept running! She thrashed a handy field by 3.5L, leading every step of the way.

Her overall time for the 1200m was just 0.2 seconds lower then the Open 1200m stakes race won by Atlante, which featured dual Group 1 winner Trust in a Gust, as well as last week’s stunning group winner and Emirates fancy Lucky Hussler.

Third up was the 1200m Group 3 Champagne Stakes around the Valley. She got into a speed duel with smart filly Eloping – who won last week’s Blue Sapphire at Caulfield – and just couldn’t go with her, fading out late to run third.

Last start at Caulfield in the 1200m Group 3 TB Breeders, she was absolutely enormous. She went to the lead and ran the first 600m of the race 6L faster than average! After going so hard she was entitled to fold right up but it took every ounce of champion filly Earthquake’s courage to overhaul her inside the last 50m.

The overall time in the race was half a second quicker than what the open age mares went in the last race over 1200m, and that’s produced good form lines with runner-up Girl Guide narrowly beaten in last week’s Tristarc by Sweet Idea.

Speed maps suggest she’ll get an easy time of things out in front and on what she’s shown so far this campaign, they won’t be able to catch her.

Race favourite More Radiant was camped of Tawteen in the Breeders, getting a soft run while Tawteen scorched along in front. She still couldn’t get past her despite having every possible chance.

I can’t see her turning the tables here at any stretch!
