Both sides caused halftime-headaches for punters last week as they took the route less-expected to come away with points.

The Phoenix travelled to Gosford, and after a 2-1 home loss to the Perth Glory just six days earlier, it looked as if the 2012-13 premiers had this fixture in the bag.

But with the hard work of Phoenix captain Andrew Durante and two brilliant goals from newly-signed strikers Michael McGlinchy and Nathan Burns, the Phoenix were able to bounce back from the woes of a Tom Doyle own-goal.

The Jets played away to a superstar-led Melbourne City in a historic clash for the refurbished Victorian side at AAMI Park last Sunday.

While it was expected City’s marquee signings would lead the way with a goalfest, the Jets held their backline together in the first half, and goalkeeper Joshua Brillante was able to keep a clean sheet despite City’s forceful attack firing more than ten shots.

In the second half, bringing on Argentinean striker Jeronimo Neumann in the 72nd minute helped boost the Jets’ attack to an eventual goal from new signing Edson Montano in the 85th minute.

David Villa responded minutes later with a long-awaited goal in front of the home crowd.

Leading up to Sunday’s fixture, coach Ernie Merrick will be expecting a win for the home side to keep them in the top half of the ladder after an anti-climactic 2013-14 season. No major changes look to be made for either sides but it’s worth noting Marcos Flores is making a stellar recovery from his off-season injury and may play the full match.

Joel Griffiths created a number of opportunities for the Jets last week, feeding the ball upfield and dribbling into enemy territory to create the offensive opportunities before being subbed off in the late second half.

Recently-signed South-American striker Montano will also be one to watch in Sunday’s fixture, The 23-year-old has ventured to the Hunter region from the Barcelona Sporting Club situated in his home-land of Ecuador and last week, scored his debut goal for the Jets off a brilliant cross from Griffiths.

For the Phoenix, 26-year-old striker Burns, who made 12 appearances on loan for the Jets last season, will be the player to watch.
