TWO GOOD! Zahra wins back-to-back Melbourne Cups on Without a Fight as three horses pull up lame
Without a Fight completed the rare Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double on Tuesday as star jockey Mark Zahra went back-to-back in the big one after…
Gai Waterhouse has withdrawn The Offer from the 2014 Melbourne Cup. The one-time favourite was her only horse on the 40-strong list of second acceptances.
This leaves Waterhouse without a runner in her defence of the Cup, after Fiorente claimed a maiden Melbourne Cup crown in 2013 for the Sydney trainer.

A poor run in the 2014 Caulfield Cup has prompted Waterhouse to pull the pin, despite the one-time favourite being as short as $6 to win the race after winning the Sydney Cup in the autumn.
Back in September, Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter warned The Offer’s initial short price could have been a false dawn.
His form in the Sydney Autumn Carnival was questioned due to a potential lack of quality of competition.
“You could either say he was super dominant or you could say he was beating fairly ordinary horses by big margins on wet tracks,” Carpenter said.
“Gai won it last year with Fiorente and I guess there’s that sense that maybe now she’s done it once she can do it again.
“But Fiorente seen as a horse of enormous ability in Europe, whereas The Offer didn’t quite have the same credentials.”
Without the first lady of Australian racing, there’ll certainly be less colour at the 2014 Melbourne Cup.
The removal of The Offer opens the way for Unchain My Heart, moving up the order to 24th. Trainer David Hayes is unsure if he’ll run before the Cup, saying “I’ll run if we can get a start without running in the Lexus.”
Unchain My Heart could be bumped out of contention should a horse not above it in the order of entry win the Mackinnon or Lexus Stakes.
Geelong Cup winner Caravan Rolls On is one of these horses – lining up in Saturday’s Lexus on Derby Day in an attempt to win his way into the Melbourne Cup.
The other contenders that need a win include Araldo, Amralah, Big Memory, La Amistad, Let’s Make Adeal, Like A Carousel, Lord Van Percy, Marksmanship, Mr O’Ceirin, Shoreman, Signoff, Thunderbird One, and Wish Come True.
