Former Australia captain Allan Border has labelled a curious field placing by Michael Clarke, during the first day of the second Test against Pakistan, as not being in the spirit of the game.

When Australia paceman Peter Siddle set off to bowl in Abu Dhabi, he had Mitchell Johnson standing right beside him at straight hit in a direct line behind the umpire.

Pakistan batsman Azhar Ali pulled away from his batting stance in the last over before lunch in an apparent reference to Johnson’s position in the batsman’s eye line.

Johnson stood still as the bowler ran in to bowl the next delivery.

“Where he is there, I don’t think it is in the sprit of the game,” Border told Fox Sports.

“When he moves to the mid-on side of straight, I’m a bit more relaxed about that.

“When he’s right behind the bowler’s arm, I don’t know.”

Siddle also had three short mid-wickets and two short covers with only one slip.

Australia used eight bowlers on a flat batting track on Thursday as Pakistan reached an imposing tally of 2-304.
