$26 Melbourne Cup 2014 chance Cavalryman has suffered a setback on the eve of the Melbourne Cup, with Racing Victoria stewards reporting the horse has “swelling near fore fetlock”. He could be scratched as early as tonight, with the Godolphin stable taking x-rays to ascertain if he will start in the Cup.

If he isn’t scratched by Godolphin, he’ll be vetted on arrival to Flemington and undergo further examination.

Sky Sports reporter Andrew Bensley informed Twitter that x-rays has been taken of the Saeed Bin Suroor-trained stayer and sent to an overseas vet in the UK, and a leading vet in Geelong, Dr Chris Whitton, was also examining the images.

It’s understood a decision is likely to come on the morning of the Cup.

Cavalryman, who ran in the Cup in 2012, was to be ridden by Craig Williams, and was given a chance by most tippers, with The Roar‘s own Justin Cinque summing up his chances as: “An outsider that can win the Cup.”

Roar expert Andrew Lemon tipped him to have a strong run in what is a tough race to pick, but the latest revelations put his participation in serious doubt.

If he is scratched he will be the second horse scratched from the race, after outsider Sea Moon was ruled out this morning due to injury.

Godolphin also have Willing Foe, to be ridden by James McDonald – also a $26 chance.
