TWO GOOD! Zahra wins back-to-back Melbourne Cups on Without a Fight as three horses pull up lame
Without a Fight completed the rare Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double on Tuesday as star jockey Mark Zahra went back-to-back in the big one after…
Michael Moroney-trained stayer Araldo has reportedly been rushed to hospital with a suspected broken cannon-bone after the running of the 2014 Melbourne Cup.
The injury happened on the way back to the mounting yard, according to Sky Sports radio journalist Andrew Bensley.

Bensley tweeted:
“Araldo was spooked by an Aussie flag waving returning to Flemington mounting yard after race and lashed out badly putting leg thru fence.”
Araldo has cut leg severely after taking fright returning to his stable after Melb Cup. Likely to go to Werribee vets for examination.

Update: Araldo has sadly been humanely euthanised by vets, with the fracture to his leg deemed too severe to recover for the health and happiness of the horse. The owners made the decision in the best interests of the horse.
Importantly, this happened after the race, and was in no way related to his run on the track.
Bensley said the vets were attempting to uncover whether pins could be placed in the leg of the horse and it could recover from there.
Araldo has fractured pastern. Vets determining if pins can be placed in injury to help process. Will update.

The Ballymore Stables-horse ran seventh in the big race, after a tough run from the outside barrier. He was beaten just over nine lengths by winner Protectionist.
Araldo was a $21 chance heading into the Melbourne Cup, following a bold finish in the Caulfield Cup.
Araldo was set to race in the Lexus Stakes on Saturday to guarantee a ticket into the Cup, before Green Moon and The Offer were withdrawn from the race, pushing Araldo up the order of entry.
Moroney bought Araldo from Great Britain to take the Cups, and was a winner of last year’s Bart Cummings before a third in last year’s Lexus denied the then-six-year-old a run in the Cup.
The setback for the horse follows the tragic death of Admire Rakti, who collapsed and died after being led back to his stall after the race, and the death of Verema after last year’s Cup.
