German trained horse Protectionist has claimed the 2014 Melbourne Cup. He strode home to beat perennial bridesmaid Red Cadeaux and Who Shot Thebarman in third.

One of the pre-race favourites, Signoff, ran fourth.

Favourite Admire Rakti has unfortunately died after the race, noticeably slowing in the final straight and finishing last.
