Melbourne Cup 2014: Guide to the best sweeps for your office

The Melbourne Cup Sweep is the classic way that offices around the country celebrate, and in many ways the $2 sweep is the reason the entire nation is stopped.

Fumbling around with your little printed section of newspaper, trying to figure out whether it’s the right combination of salmon and yellow that crossed the line first, because you can barely see the TV over the heads of others, let alone hear caller Greg Miles over the hubbub.

So we’ve done the heavy lifting, and have compiled a list of the easiest to use, best, most informative and diverse Melbourne Cup sweeps available.

Best basic sweep for the office:
The ABC have put together a very useful little sweep for printing off and using. You can find it here.

It’s beauty is in its simplicity: horse name and a picture with the colours the jockey will be wearing. It’s all you’ll need to know when you’re screaming at your nag.

To be fair, that’s about all they’re allowed to say, we suppose, so not showing the odds is very deliberate. There’s also no formguide.

Middle of the road sweep for those who like a touch of luxury:
Melbourne’s biggest Fairfax arm The Age have put together a very nice sweep for Melbourne Cup day, which you can access here.

It contains the information that most semi-keen Melbourne Cup day-only punters will need, including who the jockey is, a little comment on their chances and the standard name and picture with colours. It won’t be all you need to know about the race, but it will be enough to get you thinking about heading to the local and yarning with the resident expert, just to see how long you last.

The Roar would suggest that if you really want to get to know the horses in the Melbourne Cup, then you read expert Justin Cinque’s extensive preview of every runner in the race here.

The bonafide luxury sweep:
The deluxe options are harder to come by, but the Herald Sun have put together an online sweep tool that does all the calculations you’ll need for a trouble-free sweep.

You enter in the amounts, the number of competitors, and it’ll do the heavy lifting.

It also comes with the added bonus of saving the environment by requiring no paper! We dig that.
