Protectionist has become the first German horse to ever claim Australia’s most famous race.

It was thanks to an incredible turn of speed on the final straight that saw Protectionist chase down Red Cadeaux and win by a comfortable margin.

The race favourite Admire Rakti featured heavily during the opening stages of the race, but could not hold on as the pack hit the final corner. The Japanese stayer dropped off as the horses hit the straight, finishing the race in last place.

Tragically, an extremely distressed Admire Rakti collapsed following the race an passed away.

Red Cadeaux took the lead as the front pack broke away in the final sprint. However the nine year old was destined to continue its run of second places, failing to become the oldest horse to win the race since 1938.

But the winner was Protectionist, securing a place in history, claiming the 2014 Melbourne Cup a head of Red Cadeaux and Who Shot Thebarman.
