The fight game is one where people get old in a hurry. This could be true of Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua as the former UFC Champion was knocked out in just 34 seconds by Ovince Saint Preux in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Brazil this weekend.

Following on 24 hours after UFC Fight Night Sydney, Shogun looked to close the distance against his American opponent a wild flurry of strikes.

This, however, proved to be his undoing as Saint Preux deftly side-stepped and countered with a perfectly timed left check hook, which dropped the Brazilian to the canvas.

Referee Mario Yamasaki gave Rua plenty of time to recover but Saint Preux was relentless in his assault, raining down a constant barrage of punches and forcing the stoppage.

Following the loss, Rua said he would think about his next move. Given he is now 1-4 in his last five fights and with plenty of wars taking their toll on his body, one must wonder if it is time for the former champion and 2005 Pride Middleweight GP winner to hang up his gloves.

Elsewhere, Warlley Alves scored a controversial unanimous decision over Alan Jouban. Following two action-packed rounds which could have been scored either way, Jouban rose to the occasion and dominated the final frame with lightning fast combinations which had the Brazilian reeling.

Many felt this had swayed the bout in the American’s favour, but when the scores were read Alves was awarded the 29-28 victory on all three scorecards. Jouban was visibly upset, but as the old saying goes, never leave it in the hands of the judges.

Further down the card Cloudio da Silva used takedowns and top control to grain a split decision over Leon Edwards and Dhiego Lima took a unanimous decision over Jorge Oliveira.

This was the second UFC card of the weekend and displays a significant increase in the expansive organisation’s aim to become a truly global enterprise. Eyes now turn to the UFC180 Interim Heavyweight Title clash between Fabricio Werdum and Australia’s Mark Hunt in Mexico, the winner will face Cain Valasquez at some point in 2015.

In Brazil this week though, the talk will be what next for Shogun Rua, we may see him back in the cage soon, but if not, thanks for the amazing memories.
